August 2018 Information about the Harry Roberts - Sunray Cabin and Property on Nelson Island
Hello!
( Please read the newest posts....things have changed drastically. BC Hydro is transfering the property to the Sechelt Nation. The future of access to the property and log cabin are very uncertain.)
This site will be the Go-To place for accurate and up to date information about the beautiful and slightly remote property on Nelson Island that was Harry Roberts family homestead.
For the Harry Roberts personal history...please search for that on a different site.
This site features " current events"....and the current status of the cabin and property.
Myths that need busting!
1. The Harry Roberts cabin and property is NOT a park.
2. The cabin and property are NOT owned and maintained by a heritage society.
3. The cabin and property are NOT abandoned.
If its not all that stuff....then what is going on there?
FACTS OF THE MOMENT ABOUT THE CABIN AND PROPERTY
Since 1990, Margaret and Barry Pearson have been the lease holders of the Roberts cabin and property AKA the Sunray cabin...or just Sunray.
The owner of the entire parcel is BC Hydro.
Barry Pearson passed away several years ago, and Margaret is currently the sole lease holder...and it will stay that way for the foreseeable future.
There is a society that Margaret was instrumental in forming. It exists to nurse the property towards being included in the SCRD park system. There is a quiet conversation among interested parties to investigate this idea.
There is currently no schedule for the Sunray property to be converted to park.
That means that the Sunray cabin and property are private, despite local legend to the contrary.
Even the locals are confused over the status of the Sunray cabin..many people tell us that they have been coming for years and never saw anyone...so assumed ( wrongly ) that is was a free for all....but it's not.
WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN TO TOURISTS AND PASSERS BY?
In the future, there will signs posted to notify visitors about the status of the property.
When the family is moved in and staying at the cabin...there will be signs to tell the curious....that the owners/lease holders are in fact using the property that they pay for and maintain.
During those times...treat it as Private Property.
Margaret Pearson is the number 1 cheerleader for show and tell about the cabin and property. Here's what she wants to occur.
When she or the other family is NOT there....have a look around. Clean up any mess and take it home ( yours or others)
Leave the property better than you found it.
SIGN THE BOOK!
NO FIRES EVER
Do not camp on the property
TOUR OPERATORS ....Do not camp in the cabin or yard...even if you have done so in the past.
No Parties, Weddings or other functions without permission. This goes back to the whole PRIVATE PROPERTY thing.
I understand that some of you have been coming to the property for 20+ years...but as you have seen...it belongs to someone that pays for it, insures it and maintains it.
We do have very helpful neighbors and friends that weedeat, garden and help with maintenance..we all stay in touch to keep up to date on what's happening there.
We appreciate every bit of effort that volunteers put into the place when we can't be there.
